Inside an $11,000-Per-Night Cruise Ship Suite

Cloud 9 Spa™ staterooms do things a little different than ordinary staterooms. For starters, we dare you to cross the threshold without feeling a little more relaxed. Once you're inside, you'll find pleasing decor and in-room amenities like ELEMIS bath products and spa-branded bathrobes and slippers to enhance your stay. Get all the comforts of home and then some, with absolutely none of the hassles.

I tried Carnival's older cruise ships and never want to go back

There’s also the Havana Bar – this is open to all guests, not just those in Havana rooms. It has lively Latin music and Cuban-inspired coffees and cocktails, making it a really fun place to hang out. They’re not really any more spacious than a standard Interior, so you’re just getting a more premium version of the same room with access to that tranquil pool away from some of the noise of the family pools. Carnival Cruise Line doesn’t offer single rooms for solo travellers, but the Upper/Lower room is the nearest you’ll get. Each room had two single mattresses pushed together to create a king-size bed, two lamps, a TV, and a bathroom with a shower. A royal warrant is a distinction provided to companies that offer goods or services to the Queen, the late Duke of Edinburgh, or Prince Charles, according to the official Royal Warrant website.

Like many cruise cabins, our room had one outlet next to the desk.

They’re the best choice if you are prone to feeling cramped because even just a small balcony in the fresh air can feel very open and relaxing. As well as being able to enjoy breakfast and daily snacks in the lounge, you’ll also have access to board games, video games and family movies there too. As well as that, by booking a Family Harbor Interior cabin kids will eat free at most speciality restaurants on board. On Carnival cruises, a Premium Interior (code 4N or 4O) is essentially just a larger version of an Interior room. They’re about the same size as a Balcony cabin, but without the Balcony attached.

Suites are also able to accommodate more passengers and standard staterooms, so if you want your entire family in one room, they're a great option. Otherwise, you'll have to consider an ocean view room or two adjoining staterooms. Booking a Cloud 9 Spa Interior room (category 4S or 4T) grants you exclusive spa perks. From priority spa bookings to unlimited access to the Thermal Suites, it’s a haven for relaxation enthusiasts.

Relax in your own personal outdoor oasis… designed for maximum sea breeze and the most stunning views. We appreciated Carnival's attention to detail in the bathroom, from the large shower to the tiling on the floor. Considering our last Carnival cruise had spongy, bumpy and blue flooring, this was a huge upgrade to see the modern design of the bathroom staterooms. Although small, the bathroom was well designed to utilize the space.

Carnival vessels based on the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico mostly sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas. Some East Coast ships also head to Bermuda, New England and Canada. On the West Coast, sailings to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska are the norm. However, with two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards.

Onboard Activities

From unexpected porthole views to the luxurious touches of the Cloud 9 Spa rooms, Carnival has truly elevated the concept of ‘interior’. Wherever on the ship you make your home base, good times aren't far. Some of them are definitely more cramped than others, especially the Upper/Lower ones, but the cost savings could well make the difference to your overall cruise holiday. Havana Interior cabins are available on Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama. And you also get one free evening of Night Owls babysitting at the kids club, which is great for when parents want a little bit of quiet time. Cloud 9 Spa Interior rooms are available on Excel Class, Vista Class, Dream Class and Sunshine Class ships.

Of course, the natural light coming from the balcony makes a huge difference in the stateroom's ambiance. While our room was pitch-black all the time, which is perfect for napping and sleeping, not having any natural light can be an issue for some. Overall, the interior cabins on Carnival Horizon are clean and comfortable, albeit small. It is located forward on the ship, six cabins down from the forward elevators and stairs. With that in mind, we recently stayed in stateroom #7238 aboard the Horizon.

Carnival did not prominently label the brand of products offered in Monica's bathroom. Meanwhile, Carnival Vista's stateroom was $1,081 without gratuities for seven nights, about $154 a night, or around £111 per night. The Queen Elizabeth's stateroom cost £628 without gratuities for five nights, which worked out at £125 a night, or around $174 per night.

If you want something out of the ordinary for a low price (these cabins are favored by solo travelers, too), these inside cabins might be a good choice for you. Carnival's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as generally cabins that face outwards now are built with balconies. Cabins on recently unveiled or overhauled vessels mostly have a soothing palette of creams and blues. You'll also want to book early if you're aiming for a suite — particularly if you want one of the best suites on a Carnival ship. The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a balcony cabin on an older Carnival ship than on a newer vessel.

Carnival also offers dedicated tween and teen programs on ships for children aged 12 to 17. The younger children in this age range (12-14) are grouped into what's known as Circle C and have their own dedicated lounge on ships. It's a place to get together to talk, watch movies, play video games and take part in other activities. Each group has its own age-appropriate activities ranging from face painting to pirate adventures. On many ships there are extensive dedicated spaces for the different groups.

You might be someone who feels claustrophobic in an Interior room, and if that’s the case then you definitely shouldn’t book one! It’s not worth making yourself feel uncomfortable just to save some money. A Havana Interior stateroom (category code HA) is decorated in a more luxurious Old Havana style and allows guests to access the exclusive Havana Pool area, where you can relax in peace. For that reason, only guests aged 12 and over can stay in a Havana cabin.

It could also depend on whether you’re cruising solo, plus-one, with the family or as a group. The term “family room” brings to mind that comfy place where kids and parents can do the all-important work of having fun simply being together. You’ll notice that Family Harbor staterooms sport a classically American nautical décor... As you explore the rest of the ship, the Family Harbor benefits come along, with your kids eating free in most onboard specialty restaurants... Plus one free evening of Night Owls babysitting service, so you can enjoy some much-deserved alone time. Exploring the different categories of cabins on a Carnival cruise, I discovered that there are specialty options for Interior rooms that offer unique perks and benefits.

Inside cabins are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On newer Carnival ships, a significant portion of cabins are balcony cabins — the rooms everyone wants these days. But the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins on Carnival's newer ships isn't nearly as high as on the newer ships of some rival lines such as Royal Caribbean.

As noted above, Carnival ships also have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships of some of its rival lines. By contrast, the line's newer ships have a higher percentage of inside cabins than you'll find on the newer ships of some rival lines. An Interior stateroom is the most affordable way to cruise, and Mardi Gras’ interiors don’t leave out the comfort!

Oceanview cabins on Carnival ships can sometimes be bigger than inside cabins and even bigger than balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). On Carnival Panorama, some oceanview cabins measure 185 square feet — the same as inside cabins. But there also are bigger "standard" oceanview cabins that measure 220 square feet and "deluxe" oceanview cabins that measure 230 square feet. Balcony staterooms were designed for maximum sea breeze and the most stunning views, so look to a balcony if you’re looking to cruise with a view aboard Mardi Gras. A Junior Balcony stateroom features the same size balcony as standard Balcony rooms, just with a little less interior space. Any time you’re in your room, you’re just steps away from your own personal outdoor oasis, featuring the sort of sea view you can also feel.
